Highlights of Scotland Itinerary

Day 1

Arrive in Edinburgh - overnight in Edinburgh area

The capital city of Scotland since the 15th century, beautiful Edinburgh has many historic buildings including Edinburgh Castle, Holyrood Palace, St Giles Cathedral plus the 'Old Town & 'New Town' UNESCO World Heritage Site. Every August the city hosts the largest annual international arts festival in the world.

Day 2

Edinburgh - overnight in Edinburgh area

Iconic, historic landmarks, the Forth Bridges tower over the turbulent waters of the Firth of Forth, just 9 miles west of Edinburgh. The Forth Rail Bridge (built in 1890) had the longest single cantilever bridge span in the world. A second road bridge, the Queensferry Crossing is currently under construction.

Day 3

Scottish Borders - Melrose Abbey - overnight in Edinburgh area

Melrose Abbey is the most famous ruin in Scotland, known for its superbly carved decorative details and as the burial place for Robert the Bruce's heart. A Cistercian abbey founded by King David I in 1136, it was destroyed by an English army in 1385 but rebuilt in the early 15th century.

Day 4

Loch Lomond - Glencoe - overnight in Fort William area

The site of the 1692 massacre of the MacDonald Clan by the soldiers of King William, the dramatic and beautiful valley of Glencoe is one of the most hauntingly picturesque sites in Scotland. Its steep mountains – home to red deer, wildcat, golden eagle and rare plants – offer superb walking and climbing. This spectacular landscape featured in the James Bond film Skyfall.

Day 5

Glenfinnan Monument & Viaduct - overnight in  Fort William area

Instantly recognisable from the ‘Harry Potter’ films, and overlooking superb Highland scenery and Loch Shiel, the spectacular Victorian Glenfinnan railway viaduct has 21 arches and a maximum height of 30 metres. The Glenfinnan Monument, erected in 1815, marks the spot where Bonnie Prince Charlie raised his standard in 1745 and pays tribute to the clansmen who died for the Jacobite cause.

Day 6

Eilean Donan Castle  - overnight in Kyle of Lochalsh

Scotland’s most photographed castle, Eilean Donan is completely surrounded by water with just a footbridge connecting the island to the mainland. Picturesque Eilean Donan  castle dates back to 1214 and has been the setting for many films, such as Highlander. In 1719, it was garrisoned by Jacobite troops and was blown up by the English. Now completely restored it displays fine furniture and paintings.

Day 7

Isle of Skye - Loch Ness - overnight in Inverness area

Cross the Skye Bridge to the Isle of Skye and explore the charming fishing harbour at Portree, Skye's largest town, with its colourful cottages. Continue to Loch Ness in the Great Glen. Up to 213 metres deep, the loch contains the largest volume of fresh water of any lake in the British Isles and is famous for it's mysterious inhabitant, the Loch Ness Monster. It is also ideal for cruising and sailing.

Day 8

Cairngorms National Park - overnight in Speyside area

The Cairngorms National Park is the largest area of unspoilt wilderness in Great Britain with stunning mountains, forests, crystal clear rivers, picturesque lochs, and a lively Gaelic culture. Some 25% of the UK's endangered species thrive in the Cairngorms,  including the red squirrel and osprey.  From hill walking, to skiing, and adventure sports to whisky trails – there's something for everyone here.

Day 9

St Andrews - Fife - overnight in Fife/Perthshire area

Thought to be the 'home of golf' because the sport was first played on the links at St Andrews in the early 1400s, the Old Course is the most famous and most prestigious golf course in Scotland having hosted more Open Championships than any other course. It features large double greens and the iconic Swilcan Bridge spanning the first and 18th holes.
